Building Kingdoms

Study No. 9 (Feb. 16, 2013)

She walks the shoreline and
Drags her toes through the sand.
She tilts her head slightly to the side,
Lost in the breakers of low tide.
Then continues on.

As she goes she looks down at all of the things:
Sand and sea glass and bottle caps and six pack rings,
Styrofoam and sea foam as it slips and swells,
And buoy bits and ghost nets and dead wood and broken shells.
And some skipping stones too.

Then she notices that there is no one else here in this part of the bay.
She grabs a long dead branch, all crooked and dry and gray,
And scoops out from the water a white plastic bag.
"This place will be my kingdom," says she. "Here is my flag!"
She sticks the branch into the sand,

And runs back to show Mama.
