Turkish coffee

Once upon a time
a man fell asleep
beneath a willow tree.

He dreamed of a voice
that told him that upon awakening,
he should pick as many stones as he could carry
and take them with him on his journey.

When the man awoke, he wondered at the dream,
but figured he'd pick a few pebbles
just in case
as he traveled toward his destiny.

Soon he had his pack full of stones and pebbles,
to the point where he couldn't walk anymore
having to constantly stop and rest.

Annoyed at his enormous load
(for he had picked oh so many stones by now)
he stopped by the side of the road and emptied his bag,
taking with him only three of the smallest pebbles.

He continued on his journey
until one day,
falling asleep beneath a tree once more,
he dreamed of the same voice, that said
"behold your treasure..!"

Startled, the man awoke to find
a small emerald, a ruby and a diamond
where the pebbles used to be.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, "and to think I had a bag full and emptied it!"

Everything about this post seemed so stylistically yourself, Maria. I love it!

Really like the story! A perfect little parable! Also, could you please read the fortune from the dregs of turkish coffee? (Like we did at under-over)

I was recently narrated this parable by an old middle school teacher of mine. I cannot break into the riddle's answer, but the dregs, Derick, clearly portray our old man holding 3 specks of gem dust, worried at whether the story ended well or not.

The fortune says our man's grown old. And there's no way he can turn back in time. He must come to terms with with life and fruits he's found.

At first I wondered what the parallel was...the unforeseen treasures of turkish coffee? But no, there is an actual old man hanging out in there. (: More like a skeleton in a cloak and a hat. Nice! I am going to second what SDT said.
